January 2015 Moda Club

Great to see so many of you!  It's so fun to gather and see what everyone has been working on this Winter.  We had 39 blocks turned in for our 2015 group quilt.  It is together, but awaiting a border and quilting .  Hope to have it hanging for the February Moda Club  Meeting on 2/18/15.

This quilt will hang in our club room, until one of you (who made a block), wins it in November.  We received a lovely thank you note from Donna Sager, who won last years quilt.

Because of the Brave

My first efforts at using scraps for 2015, involved making pillows.

Complete tutorial here.   By adding a zipper you can change up that same pillow form throughout the year.  Fun and fast to make.

Linda shared a quilt called Sweet Tea.

This quilt would work very nice with any jelly roll.  

The shop sample is made with Persimmon by Basic Gray.

Christmas in July

Some how it seems wrong to be talking about Christmas, when it is only July...But, those of us that love to quilt, sew and knit, need time to put these labors of love together.  Which means, we need to be starting these projects now.

We've been featuring a different pincushion each month.

June Moda Club

Fingerless Gloves
by Jane VanDenburg

2 balls Noro Silk Garden -- or
any yarn, DK/Worsted weight, long color striping yarn, (label recommended size
8 to 10 needle)
#5 needles
(additional #8 needle optional) -- double points
or circulars or two sets of double points so you can do both at the same
time (could be one set of #5 and one set of #4 or #6 and use the five #5 and 2
from the extra set)
2 pieces of waste
yarn…. Each about a 18” long.

Gauge: eh. Use the above and it should work.

Size: One size fits most. Length
is adjusted while you are knitting.

Note: Gloves are knit in the round, starting at the
top and working to the fingers. Try it
on after you have knit about two inches.
If it really doesn’t fit start again with the other ball and -- if it’s
too big, take out 5 stitches, if it’s too tight add 5 stitches. Now you have it right, so pull out the first
one and make it to match. Most parts are
variable to suit yourself. IF YOU WANT
TO USE A FINGERING/SOCK YARN… use #2 or 3 needle, cast on 60 to 70 stitches and
use 10 stitches for the thumb hole.

Directions: Cast on 45 stitches and join yarn. Placing a marker at the beginning of the
round.
(This is where I
used the # 8 needles, I cast on onto the #8s to make the top very stretchy,
then changed to the #5s as I knit the first round. I cast all the stitches on one #8 needle
using the knit cast-on technique, then knitted the first 15 on the first #5
needle [K3, P2 ribbing], next 15 on needle two, last 15 on needle 3, join by
knitting into needle #1 and place a marker three stitches in on this needle to
indicate the beginning of a new round.)

Ribbing: K3, P2, repeat around….. do this for and
inch or so…. for 10 to 15 rounds or so….. or for the whole glove.

Body of
glove: Stockinette stitch, just knit.

Thumb opening: When the glove is as long as you want it to
be to the start of the thumb hole…. Do this…..
On needle #1 knit 3 stitches, drop the working yarn and
knit seven stitches with a piece of waste yarn, then slip these stitches back
on the needle and knit them again with your working yarn. Continue knitting and this hole will be
opened up later for the thumb. Pick up
these stitches later to create your thumb.

or-- If you want just a thumb
hole, without knitting a short thumb…. Cast off these seven stitches, and on
the next round cast on seven stitches and its done!

Finishing the
finger opening: Decide how much past
the thumb you want the glove to go…. Say its 1 inch. Now count how many rows in
one inch of the body of the glove you have just knit….. could be ten, could be
eighteen rows….. you decide… I did the
last 10 rows of the glove in the K3, P2 ribbing and then bind off. You can choose to do the last 10 or 5 or so
rows in ribbing.

Make the Thumb: 15 stitches around. As you take the waste yarn out, pick up the
stitches at the same time. Pick up the
bottom stitches on one needle and the top stitches on another needle. You will have 7 stitches on the bottom needle
and 6 stitches on the top one. Start
knitting on the bottom and knit 5 stitches.
With another needle knit the last 2 stitches, now knit up one stitches
in the edge and knit 2 stitches from the top needle (5 stitches). With yet another needle, knit the 4 stitches
off the top needle and knit up one stitch in the edge (5 stitches.) Place a marker for the beginning of
a round and knit a few rows…. Finish with 3 to 5 rows of K3, P2 ribbing….. (or just knit plain to the right
length) and bind off.

Weave in the ends and ENJOY the warmth…….Happy knitting,
